  • A study conducted by a US hospital treating COVID patients between January-October 2020
  • They analyzed data from 48,000 patients to find out whether exercise helps protect against severe COVID-19.

Harvard Health Publishing periodically publishes numerous health articles and study reports. Recently it published an article by Dr. Monique Tello (MD), a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. the title of the article was ‘Does exercise help protect against severe COVID-19?’. We all know about the importance of some physical activity in our daily schedule. Exercise keeps our bodies fit, our muscles soft and strong, and various body parts and organ systems fit to fight or slow down many diseases. It also helps us to live longer.

The US regulatory body CDC’s ‘Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans’ recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week.

importance of the study

Dr. Tello British Journal of Sports Medicine citing original research findings from a study published by the United States, which suggests that regular activity helps people. The risk of becoming seriously ill due to Kovid in them is reduced. The study is titled, ‘Physical inactivity is associated with a higher risk of severe COVID-19: a study on 48,440 adult patients’. He also mentions ‘exercise vital signs’. This is a study conducted on more than 48000 adult patients infected with the corona virus in a US hospital.

‘Exercise Vital Sign’

Healthcare providers at a large health care system in Kaiser Permanente California enrolled more than 48,000 adults 18 who were infected with COVID-19 between January and October 2020. The participants had to answer 2 routine questions:

On average, how many days per week do you do moderate to brisk exercise (such as brisk walking)? (scale = 0 to 7 days).

How many minutes do you exercise on average at this level? (scale = 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 90, 120, 150 or more minutes).

Low physical activity is usually followed by diseases such as being overweight, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Incidentally, these conditions are also associated with a higher risk of serious illness and death from COVID-19.

exercise saves lives

The study found that people who were consistently inactive had a significantly higher risk of hospitalization, ICU visits and death after being diagnosed with COVID than those who were active for at least 150 minutes per week. You don’t have to be infected with corona to see how regular exercise helps you live a longer, healthier and more fulfilling life. Of course, if you do get corona, activity helps protect you. Getting vaccinated provides a lot of protection.
