Beijing : China is continuously developing infrastructure in the border areas amid tensions with India. In this sequence, it has started operating a fully electric bullet train in the remote Himalayan region of Tibet, which is the first such train here. China on Friday operated this train linking Tibet’s provincial capital Lhasa to Nyingchi, a Tibetan border town strategically close to Arunachal Pradesh. India is closely monitoring the entire development.

The 435.5-km-long Lhasa-Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has been inaugurated ahead of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) centenary celebrations on July 1. The first electrified railway in the Tibet Autonomous Region opened on Friday morning as the ‘Fuxing’ bullet train connecting Lhasa to Ningchi enters the plateau, reports Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency.

This is China’s second railway in Tibet

The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be the second railway in Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It will pass through the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the most active geological regions in the world.

Chinese President Xi Jinping in November directed officials to expedite construction of a new rail project linking Sichuan province and Ningchi in Tibet, saying the new rail line would play an important role in terms of stability in the border areas. The Sichuan–Tibet Railway starts in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province and enters Tibet via Qamdo via Yan. Because of this a 48 hour journey from Chengdu to Lhasa can be completed in 13 hours.

The area is adjacent to the border of Arunachal

Nyingchi is a prefecture-level city of Medog, bordering Arunachal Pradesh. China sees Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet, while India has vehemently rejected its claim. India and China share a border line of about 3,488 km, in many parts of which there are disputes between the two countries.

According to the report of China’s official daily ‘Global Times’, Qian Feng, director of the Research Department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, said, “If the dispute on the India-China border continues, this railway will provide China with strategic materials in these areas.” Will provide great convenience for carrying.
